The Royal Corps of Engineers
The Corps of Royal Engineers (RE) is beside the Royal Artillery the oldest of the "scientific"  services.. Theirs is the task to lay and clear minefields, to build and demolish bridges and fortifications etc. The R.E. sub-units  are  called  regiments  and squadrons. They handle everything from highly specialised military roles, as bomb disposal, mineclearing,  recce  diving  and  combat  engineering, to tasks like surveying,  road  maintainance  and using  earth moving machinery.

Fred [as he was known to family and friends] was very proud of his service in the Mechanical Equipment part of the Royal Engineers
He decided that the below certificate merited pride of place in his home and
not be destined to a cupboard/drawer as his medals.
